THESE THREE MLB PITCHERS Have all had tommy john surgery
These pitchers have all suffered the same horrific injury - a torn UCL. The only way that they were able to pitch again was to have a procedure known as "Tommy John surgery," named after the first pitcher to have it...Tommy John. Experts are not sure why this injury happened to them, but it was probably due to overuse of the arm. That overuse may have begun when they were teenagers. When each of these pitchers had their surgery, they were at the beginning of their professional careers. Their arms could not take pitching 100 or so pitches every five days - that is understandable. Pitching this amount will cause wear and tear on the arm. Many people also believe that this injury is common because throwing a baseball is not a natural motion.
Matt Harvey had Tommy John surgery at the age of 25, Justin Verlander at 30, and Stephen Strasburg at 22.
